Secondary Clauses With the Preposition "A" and the Infinitive

Some secondary clauses may be replaced by the preposition A + the infinitive of the verb. See the examples below.

1. Specifying time: "When I heard his/her voice, I was overjoyed."

Quando ho sentito la sua voce, sono saltato dalla gioia.
A sentire la sua voce, sono saltato dalla gioia.

2. Specifying a cause: "You are wrong, not to follow his advice."

Sbagli poiché non lo ascolti.
Sbagli a non ascoltarlo.

3. Specifying a purpose: "They convinced me to participate in the competition".

Mi hanno convinto affinché partecipassi alla gara.
Mi hanno convinto a partecipare alla gara

4. Stating a condition: "If you want to know the truth, I don't believe him."

Se devo dire la verità, non gli credo.
A dire la verità, non gli credo.

5. Some relative clauses starting with the pronoun "che": "They were the first to arrive."

Sono stati i primi che sono arrivati.
Loro sono stati i primi ad arrivare.
